a home for lost and bewildered umbrellas

Jeni Roddy

“Every product of the spirit or of the hands carries the imprint, the mark, the stamp of a concept of beauty” Le Corbusier

In this project created by Jeni Roddy, we re-use and re-purpose broken umbrellas found in Galway, we dismantle them and create new designs with the materials. Designs developed during the project include shelters, flying objects, even Covid-19 hacks. We learn design and sewing skills, as well as share upcycling and recycling skills, in a very sociable and caring setting.

Throughout this Autumn and Winter 2019 we collected broken and discarded umbrellas using our umbrella collecting bins in locations around Galway city. Starting in October, we hosted deconstructing umbrella workshops; taking umbrellas apart into component parts ready for reconstruction. In Spring 2020 Jeni, supported by community participants, created a series of designs using the deconstructed elements of the collected umbrellas as the materials.

Tugann an Umbrella Orphanage saol nua mar shaothair ealaíne úsáideacha do scáthanna báistí briste.

I rith an fhómhair agus geimhridh 2019, bhailigh muintir na Gallimhe 667 scáth báistí a raibh briste ag na gálaí gaoithe. Ón fhómhair ar aghaidh chuireamar ceardlainn poiblí ar siúl agus bhaineamar na scáthanna báistí as a chéile. B’shin 54kg miotal agus 667m2 éadach ar shábháil muid ón mbrúscar. Le cabhair ón phobal rinne an t-ealaíontóir Jenni Roddy athchóiriú mar shaothair nua ealaíne ar na shean-scáthanna báistí.
