What inspires the Umbrella Orphanage
I envisage the project ultimately aiming to create an Umbrella Orphanage for lost, broken and bewildered umbrellas that will be appreciated, cared for and revived into new objects through re-using, repairing, recycling and with the aim of ultimately reducing waste. I am thinking about how we can show the value of the materials that compose a broken umbrella by completing the resurrection of these materials into something new. I am interested in the lifecycle and story of these objects and how that can be captured and framed. I chose the broken umbrella because of its relationship to the local weather in the West of Ireland, buffeted by wind and rain, things get broken; how can we create from this broken point?
The project is based on expressing value in people to the same degree as expressing the value of minding, cherishing and re-invigorating the materials we will work with, through using discarded materials and creating something new.
